About UTOS
UTOS is a student-run organization dedicated to facilitating and promoting optics-related research at the three campuses at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Our aim is to collect information about all activities relating to the field of optics at U of T in one place in order to help new collaborations develop, allow for efficient exchange of knowledge and expertise, and provide information to new students and researchers interested in coming to U of T.
UTOS was started in 2020 by Ph.D. students in physics and electrical engineering who wanted to connect the optics community at U of T. The UTOS website was launched in June of 2021, with support from the Department of Physics (U of T St. George campus), Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences (U of T Mississauga campus), and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Our Team
President
Polina Zavyalova is a 3rd year PhD student in the department of electrical and computer engineering. She is working on femtosecond laser processing for astrophotonic applications.
Vice-President
Leonardo Uribe is a PhD candidate in the department of physics.
Director of Operations
Nader Allam is a 3rd year MSc student in the dept. of Medical Biophysics. He currently studies the tumour microvasculature response to accelerated hypofractionated radiotherapy using optical coherence tomography angiography and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging towards the development of adaptive radiotherapy models.
Director of Finance
Gligor Djogo is a 4th year PhD candidate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He is working on laser processing for integrated photonic packaging of SiP and fiber devices.
Director of Technology
Abdullah Rahnama is a 4th year PhD candidate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He currently works on the development of novel Bragg grating-based devices for lab-in-fiber sensing.
Director of Graphic Design
Phoenix Yu Wilkie is a graduate student pursuing her PhD in Medical Biophysics.
